The Jewish Federation of Ottawa serves as the backbone of Jewish life in the nation’s capital, offering programs, services, and opportunities that strengthen connection, identity, and resilience.
At the heart of this ongoing effort is an essential yet often understated force: volunteers. Their generosity, dedication, and selflessness form the cornerstone upon which the Federation’s work, and the work of the broader Jewish community, relies to thrive.
Volunteering is deeply rooted in Jewish values, particularly the principle of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. This value comes to life daily through individuals who dedicate their time and talents to serve others. Their efforts support seniors, welcome newcomers, mentor youth, organize events, and help raise vital funds, creating a ripple effect that touches every corner of the community.
The Annual Community Campaign, one of Federation’s most important initiatives, is a clear example of the power of volunteerism. Each year, volunteers dedicate their energy to canvassing, planning events, and connecting with donors, ensuring that the resources required to sustain Jewish life in Ottawa are raised effectively. Their commitment does more than generate funding, it strengthens the bonds within the community, reinforcing a shared sense of responsibility and care.
“As Rosh Hashanah approaches, I like to think of canvassers as the bees in our Jewish Ottawa ecosystem: hard-working, community-minded, generous, and essential for collective flourishing,” said Development Manager Lindsay Newman. “Without their seasonal efforts to connect and collect, nothing would grow.”
Six canvassers will be reaching a milestone year this season, having volunteered for over 30 years for Federation. Brent Taylor and Naomi Lipsky Cracower are two of this group who are returning for another season of campaign canvassing.
“Participating in Federation is a segue to meeting other like-minded people, some of whom will result in new friendships and become important people in our lives,” said Cracower. “Personally, I had wonderful experiences meeting committed staff and volunteers, especially when I chaired the Women’s Division Campaign.”
The volunteering does not go unnoticed by Federation’s Development staff, either.
“We are extremely appreciative of the time, talent, and treasure that is quietly and consistently given to sustain and empower Jewish life in Ottawa,” said Newman.
Volunteers also play a significant role in shaping the future of Jewish Ottawa by engaging with the next generation.
“As a canvasser, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that in some small way I am helping those who are less fortunate,” said Taylor. “It means a lot to me to support people both in my local community and in Israel.”
The benefits of volunteering extend in multiple directions. While volunteers give their time to strengthen the community, they also gain a deeper connection to the people and values that unite it. Many find fulfilment, purpose, and a renewed sense of belonging through their contributions, building friendships and shared experiences along the way, particularly through the many committees that provide guidance to Federation and its work.
For instance, the J-Fellows program, which provides professional development for young adults, relies heavily on volunteers who serve as mentors.
"Mentors are experts in their fields and are critical in helping the J-Fellows overcome challenges, refine skills, and excel in their areas of interest,” said Federation’s VP of Development Michael Reznick, who formerly oversaw the program. “Over the course of the last three years, we have had over 40 mentors who have generously given their time to help our young adults become more established.”
Other Federation programs also rely on the dedication of volunteers to help set up and support events.
“Having a parent committee composed of individuals from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise enriches PJ Library by fostering authentic contributions from our community,” said PJ Library Coordinator Eriel Ben-Gal. They “generously share their ideas and volunteer their time, chairing various events such as PJ in the Park and Babies & Bagels.”
These volunteer-led committees are critical in their support for Federation’s departments in providing valuable insight on the organization’s work.
“We could not do our work without the many dedicated volunteers who serve on our committees at the Jewish Federation of Ottawa,” said Community Relationship Coordinator Amos Bitzan. “They give their expertise, informed opinions, and their valuable time to guide us in allocating resources, creating programs, and thinking strategically for our community.”
Ultimately, it is the spirit of volunteerism that allows the Jewish Federation of Ottawa to fulfil its mission. Acts of kindness and selflessness ensure that programs remain vibrant, traditions are passed down, and those in need receive care and support.
