Jewish Ottawa Helps continues to create a safe space to share resources

In the face of antisemitism, particularly online, it is more important than ever to create safe, trusted spaces where Jewish community members can connect, share information, and support one another. Jewish Ottawa Helps, a Facebook group page created and maintained by the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, is one such online space.

Launched at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group emerged in response to a moment of profound uncertainty and isolation. Community members used it to check in on one another, offer practical help, and respond to urgent needs, whether someone was stranded at home, needed groceries or COVID tests, or simply required reassurance that they were not alone.

As circumstances have changed, the purpose of Jewish Ottawa Helps has evolved, but its core values have remained the same. Today, the page continues to serve the community by helping people share timely information and stay connected. Members regularly exchange recommendations, such as which doctors are accepting new patients, where to find specialty kosher products or holiday supplies, and how to prepare for or support special events. Just as importantly, the page remains a place where people can reach out when they need help, and know they will be met with care and respect.

As outlined in Federation’s strategic plan, our mission is to catalyze, convene, and connect Jewish life in Ottawa. Jewish Ottawa Helps is a practical expression of this vision in action. Federation is the catalyst behind the page, creating the space that enables community members to quickly share information and respond to real needs. It convenes Jewish Ottawa in a single, trusted space where people can come together across backgrounds and experiences. And it connects individuals by fostering relationships, reducing isolation, and reinforcing a shared sense of responsibility for one another.

Since its creation, Jewish Ottawa Helps has grown to nearly 2,700 members and continues to expand. Its ongoing success reflects a simple but powerful idea: a strong Jewish community is built on connection, mutual responsibility, and a willingness to show up for one another. These values are at the heart of Federation’s mission and are brought to life every day through this page.

To help ensure the group remains welcoming and supportive, clear guidelines are in place. The page is not intended for sales or repeated event promotion. Conversations are expected to remain respectful, constructive, and on topic. It is a judgment-free space, where requests for help are met with understanding and encouragement. These guidelines are essential to maintaining the positive tone and trust that define the group.

Jewish Ottawa Helps began as a response to a crisis. Today, it continues as a meaningful expression of community, helping Jewish Ottawa share, connect, and care for one another, whatever the moment calls for.
