Professor Gavison's areas of research include equality and integration, the protection of minorities, human rights, political theory, the role of courts in democracy, religion and politics, and Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.

She co-authored with R. Yaacov Medan, A New Covenant Among Jews on State and Religion Issues in Israel (2003). She was a member of the Winograd Commission, which investigated the 2006 Lebanon War, and her recommendations to then Minister of Justice Livni on the constitutional anchoring of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state were published in Constitutional Anchoring of Israel's Vision: Recommendations Submitted to the Minister of Justice (2014).

Professor Gavison is a founding member and past Chairperson and President of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel and the founding President of Metzilah, a center for Zionist, Jewish, liberal and humanist thought.
