2,500 demonstrate in Manchester against rising anti-Semitism in the U.K. and Labour Party

(JTA) – More than 2,500 people demonstrated in Manchester, England against increasing anti-Semitism in the United Kingdom and the problem of anti-Semitism in the British Labour Party.

Some 32 different Jewish groups ranging from Orthodox to Progressive Reform came together to sponsor Sunday’s rally during a rainstorm in Britain’s second-largest Jewish community. [Read more…]

British Labour Party adopts full international anti-Semitism definition – but adds a free speech clause on Israel

(JTA) – Britain’s Labour Party adopted the internationally accepted definition of anti-Semitism, along with a statement that would allow “freedom of expression” on Israel.

The party’s National Executive Committee approved the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition and all its examples, as well as the additional clause on Israel, in a vote Tuesday that had been deferred since earlier in the summer. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former British chief rabbi, warned in an interview that Jewish people are making plans to leave Britain over fears of an anti-Semitic backlash precipitated by Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Sacks said Sunday on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show that “when people hear the kind of language that has been coming out of Labour, that’s been brought to the surface among Jeremy Corbyn’s earlier speeches, they cannot but feel an existential threat.” [Read more…]

Senior British Labour Party MP quits parliament over party’s anti-Semitism

(JTA) – A veteran British Labour Party MP resigned from parliament, saying the party’s leadership is becoming “a force for anti-Semitism in British politics.”

Frank Field, the Labour whip – he was charged with maintaining parliamentary discipline among the party’s members – is the most senior Labour member to resign over the party’s ballooning anti-Semitism problem. But he will not leave the party, according to reports. [Read more…]

(JTA) – British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is battling allegations of anti-Semitism, claimed in a 2010 speech that Israel controls speeches made by British lawmakers.

The claim, captured on video, was made during a meeting of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in London, the Daily Mail reported late on Tuesday. [Read more…]

British Labour Party MP paid off Jewish assistant who complained about anti-Semitism

(JTA) – A senior member of Britain’s Labour Party used taxpayer funds to silence a longtime aide after she complained about anti-Semitism in the party.

According to The Telegraph, in 2016 MP Khalid Mahmood suspended his assistant and erstwhile lover Elaina Cohen after she posted two tweets accusing his fellow MP Naz Shah of being “anti-Zionist.” Her comments came after it was revealed that Shah, who would later be suspended by party leader Jeremy Corbyn, had written a Facebook post calling for the relocation of the entire State of Israel to the United States. (JTA) – J.K. Rowling went head to head with a fellow British writer on Twitter over his criticism of Jewish complaints about anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

Simon Maginn, who has written five thrillers under his own name and satirical comedies under the name Simon Nolan, on Sunday in a tweet called Jewish outrage over Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s 2013 comments indicating that “Zionists” do not understand British culture “patently synthetic outrage,” and called on a Jewish tweeter to “Explain your deep and wounding sense of injury.” [Read more…]
