Labour Party adopts softened version of Britain’s definition for anti-Semitism

(JTA) – Britain’s Labour Party has adopted a definition of anti-Semitism that is laxer than the one used by the British government.

The Labour definition as reported Thursday by the LBC radio station is based on the one adopted in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, or IHRA, and since then by several countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany and five others in the European Union, as well as the EU as a whole. (JTA) – British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is under fire for having anti-Israel views allegedly born out of anti-Semitism, said in a tweet that a Labour-led government would recognize Palestine as a state.

Corbyn made his remarks Saturday on Twitter during a tour of camps in Jordan for Syrian and Palestinian refugees as part of his first international trip outside of Europe since becoming Labour leader in 2015. [Read more…]

(JTA) – British Labour Party head Jeremy Corbyn holds “anti-Semitic views” that could drive Jewish Britons out of the country if he becomes prime minister, a senior Jewish leader said.

Jonathan Arkush, the outgoing president of the Board of Deputies of British Jewry, told the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph that British Jews are for the first time asking “do we have a future here?” which he blamed on the Labour leader’s failure to rid his party of anti-Semitism. Amid anti-Semitism row, British Labour loses heavily-Jewish London borough

(JTA) – Following unprecedented protests by British Jews against a major political movement, the country’s Labour Party lost in local elections a heavily-Jewish area of London that it had held for decades.

Labour, whose leadership many British Jews believe is ignoring or encouraging the proliferation of anti-Semitism in its ranks, failed in Thursday’s elections to win from the Conservatives control of the council of Barnet, which is a northern borough of London where 14 percent of the population is Jewish. ‘Three Billboards’ film inspires activist to shame British Labour Party for anti-Semitism

(JTA) – Inspired by an Oscar-nominated American film, activists against anti-Semitism in Britain raised thousands of dollars for erecting three billboards outside the headquarters of the Labour Party.

Days after setting up an appeal for donations on an online crowd-funding platform, the Community United against Labour Party Antisemitism, or Culpa, group raised $4,860 US out of their goal of $6,300 US for the sign campaign outside Labour’s headquarters on London’s Victoria Street. British Labour Party opposes call for blanket ban on Hezbollah

(JTA) – Britain’s Labour Party advised its members to block an effort in parliament to ban Hezbollah entirely.

The House of Commons planned to debate the issue Thursday at the request of Joan Ryan, a Labour lawmaker and chair of the party’s Friends of Israel group, The Jewish Chronicle reported. [Read more…]

Britian’s Labour Party ignoring complaints of anti-Semitism in its ranks, Jewish leader alleges

(JTA) – The head of the Jewish Labour Movement in Britain accused the Labour Party leadership of failing to deal with “a vast backlog” of complaints about anti-Semitism in the party ranks.

Jeremy Newmark, national chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, on Saturday night also accused the party of letting a second investigation into former London mayor Ken Livingstone get “stuck in the system” ahead of local elections in May. Livingstone’s two-year suspension from a previous investigation into his anti-Semitic comments, including that the Nazis were Zionists, ends in April. [Read more…]
