Hamas cell made up mostly of women arrested in Hebron

(JTA) – Israel arrested a Hamas cell made up mostly of women who operated out of the West Bank city of Hebron.

The cell made up of seven women was operated by two male senior Hamas operatives who served various prison sentences for Hamas activities, the Israel Security Agency (ISA), known as Shin Bet, announced Tuesday. [Read more…]

Trump administration looks set to end UNRWA funding altogether

WASHINGTON (JTA) – The United States appears set to cut off funding altogether to UNRWA, the United Nations agency that administers relief for Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

The United States has so far this year disbursed $60 million US to UNRWA. It sent $364 million US to UNRWA last year, by far the largest contribution of any entity and a third of the agency’s budget. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Video footage from 2013 has surfaced of British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is battling allegations of anti-Semitism, implying that Zionists were unable to understand British ways of thinking despite growing up in the country.

In a clip of Corbyn’s speech published by The Daily Mail, Corbyn told attendees at a London conference that “Zionists … clearly have two problems. One is they don’t want to study history, and secondly, having lived in this country for a very long time, probably all their lives, they don’t understand English irony either. They needed two lessons, which we could perhaps help them with.” [Read more…]

(JTA) – British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, already facing scrutiny over his contacts with various Palestinian terrorist groups, hosted a 2012 panel featuring a number of senior members of Hamas, the terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip.

According to a new report in The Telegraph, Corbyn appeared beside several individuals who had been convicted of murder and had been freed the previous year in a prisoner swap. [Read more…]

Israeli commits to Gaza reconstruction in Hamas ceasefire deal

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Israel has committed to the reconstruction of Gaza and to discussing the possibility of airports and seaports in the Hamas-controlled coastal territory, Haaretz reported on Thursday.

Details have begun to emerge regarding these and other terms of the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. It’s implementation began Wednesday, closing out months of escalating tensions between the two sides. [Read more…]

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Israel should not have acted with restraint in the face of hundreds of kites and balloons carrying incendiary materials launched from Gaza, Education Minister Naftali Bennett said Monday.

Bennett, the leader of the right-wing Jewish Home party, said Israel’s reluctance to go after those launching the kites, many of whom are children, allowed the problem to grow unacceptably large. [Read more…]

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) – In a sign of Argentina’s changing attitude toward Israel, the Argentine Foreign Ministry has issued a statement that seems to put the blame for recent clashes between the Israeli military and Hamas squarely on the Palestinians.

Referring to the recent escalation in tensions that has seen Hamas fire hundreds of rockets into Israeli territory and the Israelis carry out numerous retaliatory strikes against Hamas outposts and fighters, Friday’s statement expressed its “deep concern” over the violence, which it said was “caused by the launch of rockets towards Israel.” [Read more…]

(JTA) – After firing more than 180 rockets into civilian areas, armed terror groups in Gaza said Thursday afternoon that they would refrain from firing on southern Israel if Israel also maintains the calm.

Shortly after the announcement, however, more rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel. Code Red rocket alert sirens were sounded as far away from the Gaza border as Beersheba, the first time that sirens have gone off in the city since the 2014 Gaza War. At least two rockets exploded in open areas near Beersheba. [Read more…]

Israel and Hamas to unveil long-term truce, Turkish news service reports

(JTA) – Israel and Hamas will unveil a long-term truce deal at the end of the month, according to a report by the Turkish Anadolu agency, which cited an unnamed Hamas source. The report said the agreement will be heralded by a two-week trial cease-fire.

The report said that under the agreement, which was brokered by Egypt and the United Nations with input from Turkey and Qatar, Israeli restrictions on the main crossing between Israel and Gaza, Kerem Shalom, would be significantly lifted and the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza would be permanently opened.
