Israel launches operation to destroy Hezbollah tunnels on northern border

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Israel’s military launched Operation Northern Shield, to destroy tunnels constructed by Hezbollah that reach from Lebanon into Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the discovery of the tunnels and began destroying them on Monday night. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Two senior Israeli cabinet ministers are calling for early elections following the resignation of Avigdor Liberman as defence minister.

Israel’s finance and interior ministers both want to dissolve the government. If they resign, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will lose his majority in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. [Read more…]

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the decision to reach a cease-fire with Gaza terror groups during his address at a state memorial ceremony for David Ben-Gurion, the country’s first prime minister.

“In normal times, a leader must be attentive to the hearts of the people, and our people are wise. But in times of crisis, when making critical decisions in the field of security, the public cannot always be a partner in the crucial considerations that must be concealed from the enemy,” Netanyahu said of his government’s decision to agree to the cease-fire, which was not unanimous. Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman resigns over Gaza ceasefire

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman resigned his post, saying the decision to agree to a ceasefire with terrorist groups in Gaza was “a capitulation to terror.”

Liberman announced his resignation at a news conference early Wednesday afternoon, after first informing his Yisrael Beiteinu Party, which he heads. [Read more…]

Palestinian terror groups say they will observe cease-fire

(JTA) – Palestinian terror groups in Gaza reportedly have agreed to commit to a cease-fire of hostilities that have seen more than 400 rockets bombard southern Israel and Israeli retaliation in a 25-hour period.

Four mediators – Egypt, the United Nations, Norway and Switzerland – helped achieve the cease-fire, according to reports. [Read more…]

(JTA) – One person was killed and two seriously injured after a rocket fired from Gaza landed on an apartment building, as southern Israel remained under rocket siege for a second day.

The rocket hit the upper floors of a four-story apartment in Ashkelon shortly before midnight on Monday night. The body and one of the injured women were discovered early on Tuesday morning under the debris of a fallen wall. [Read more…]

Mass prayer in Jerusalem marks national day for Ethiopian Jews

JERUSALEM (JTA) – On a national holiday for Ethiopian Jews, before a crowd of tens of thousands, the president of Israel vowed that the citizens of his country will not discriminate on the basis of skin colour.

“We are brothers and sisters, and anyone who tries to undermine that has no place amongst the tribes of Israel,” Reuven Rivlin said in his address Wednesday to mark Sigd, a state holiday since 2008 that marks the Ethiopians’ yearning to return to Jerusalem and Zion. [Read more…]

Israeli jets hit 80 Gaza targets after dozens of rockets fired at southern Israel communities

(JTA) – Israeli jets struck more than 80 Hamas terror targets in Gaza after dozens of rockets were fired from the coastal strip at civilian communities in southern Israel.

Nearly 40 rockets were fired at southern Israel from Gaza on Friday night and early on Saturday morning, triggering dozens of Code Red rocket alert sirens in the communities, according to the Israel Defense Forces. [Read more…]
