Israel escalates Gaza strikes in response to sniper fire that killed soldier

(JTA) – In the heaviest fighting between the two sides since the 2014 war, Israel hit Hamas targets across Gaza on Friday in response to sniper fire at its troops on the border that killed one soldier.

At around 6 pm, amid Palestinian protests on the Gaza border, a sniper in Gaza shot at troops. One soldier succumbed from his severe injuries. [Read more…]

Hamas calls Jared Kushner ‘spokesman for the Israeli Occupation’

(JTA) – Hamas accused Jared Kushner of being a “spokesman for the Israeli Occupation” after U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser co-wrote a highly critical op-ed condemning the terror organization for prolonging the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Kushner and Greenblatt are adopting the Israeli narrative, and their aggression against Hamas points to the contempt of the American government,” Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri was quoted as saying by the Israeli daily Haaretz. [Read more…]

(JTA) – First kites and balloons, and now birds are being used to by Palestinians in Gaza to set fires in southern Israel.

Israel Nature and Parks Authority personnel on Monday afternoon found a common kestrel, a member of the falcon family, hanging from a burned tree wearing a harness to which was attached a wire wrapped around flammable material. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Sderot, where at least two rockets from Gaza caused serious damage and injured a family of four, and warned of a “a prolonged Zionist struggle.”

Netanyahu met Monday in Sderot with the heads of the local municipal councils of communities located in the Gaza border area. [Read more…]

Following escalation with Gaza, Iron Dome battery deployed to protect Tel Aviv area

(JTA) – The Israeli military deployed an Iron Dome anti-missile defence battery in the Tel Aviv area following a “situation assessment,” the Israel Defense Forces said.

Reserve soldiers were called up on Sunday to staff  the batteries, according to the IDF.

The moves came a day after more than 170 rockets and mortars were fired on Israel from Gaza. At least four Israelis were injured, including two teenage girls, when a rocket struck the roof of their home in Sderot; another rocket struck a synagogue in Sderot, which was empty at the time. Israel responded by striking 40 Hamas terror targets in Gaza. [Read more…]

Israel vows ‘strong action’ against Hamas after over 170 rockets and mortars hit southern Israel

(JTA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to take “strong action” against Hamas after more than 170 rockets and mortar shells were fired at southern Israel on Saturday.

At least four Israelis, a 52-year-old man, his wife, and two daughters, ages 14 and 15, were injured when one of the rockets landed on the roof of their home in the southern Israeli city of Sderot. A second rocket hit a synagogue in Sderot, which was empty at the time.

The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted at least 30 of the rockets. [Read more…]

At least 17 fires sparked in one day by incendiary kites and balloons

(JTA) – At least 17 fires were sparked on Israeli land near the Gaza border by incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza by Palestinian arsonists.

One of the largest fires was burning in southern Israel’s Kibbutz Or Haner. Nine teams of fire fighters and four firefighting airplanes were required to put out the fire there, Israel’s 10 Television News reported. Other fires burned in the Be’eri, Shokeda and Kisufim forests. [Read more…]
