Sara Netanyahu named suspect in corruption investigation along with her husband

(JTA) – Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been named a suspect along with her husband in an investigation into alleged corruption.

On Thursday, a police representative to a Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court judge confirmed that Sara Netanyahu is a suspect in the affair known as Case 4000. The prime minister was named a suspect six months ago.

Report says Iran gives Iraqi militias missiles capable of reaching Jerusalem

(JTA) – Iran has given missiles capable of hitting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to proxies in Iraq, Reuters reported.

Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to allies in Iraq over the last few months, three Iranian officials and two Iraqi intelligence sources told the news agency, according to the report Friday. The officials said Iran was helping the Shi’ite militias it is arming to start making their own missiles. [Read more…]

Senior British Labour Party MP quits parliament over party’s anti-Semitism

(JTA) – A veteran British Labour Party MP resigned from parliament, saying the party’s leadership is becoming “a force for anti-Semitism in British politics.”

Frank Field, the Labour whip – he was charged with maintaining parliamentary discipline among the party’s members – is the most senior Labour member to resign over the party’s ballooning anti-Semitism problem. But he will not leave the party, according to reports. [Read more…]

JERUSALEM (JTA) – U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said that a rollout of the Trump administration’s peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians is “not imminent.”

“I would imagine that we will roll something out. I hesitate even to put a month on it because it has shifted as we continue to listen and talk to people,” Friedman told the American Jewish Congress in a telephone briefing. [Read more…]

Seven arrested in alleged $14 million scam to steal funds earmarked for New York yeshivas

(JTA) – Seven people, including a rabbi, were arrested in connection with an alleged $14 million US scam to steal funds earmarked for Orthodox yeshivas in Rockland County, New York.

The suspects arrested on Wednesday afternoon requested funding for Hasidic Orthodox schools through a U.S. federal school technology-funding program for underprivileged students, NBC New York first reported. [Read more…]

Adelson-backed ‘Maccabees’ pro-Israel campus initiative to double to 80 campuses, including some in Canada

(JTA) – The Maccabee Task Force, the initiative funded by billionaire philanthropist Sheldon Adelson targeting the campus BDS movement, will double its presence to 80 campuses and for the first time will operate in Canada.

In place since 2016, the task force works with pro-Israel students on programs countering activities of the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement targeting Israel. Last year it funded programs on 40 campuses, chosen because of the intensity of BDS activity on the campus. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he was still committed to key concessions he has made in years of negotiations with Israel, including a demilitarized Palestinian state and no massive return of Palestinians to Israel.

Abbas’ remarks in a meeting Tuesday with Israeli academics are notable because he has pulled away from Trump administration efforts to revive the peace talks, principally because of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital while not extending a corresponding recognition to the Palestinians.
