Jeremy Corbyn has anti-Semitic views that could drive out British Jews, community leader says

(JTA) – British Labour Party head Jeremy Corbyn holds “anti-Semitic views” that could drive Jewish Britons out of the country if he becomes prime minister, a senior Jewish leader said.

Jonathan Arkush, the outgoing president of the Board of Deputies of British Jewry, told the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph that British Jews are for the first time asking “do we have a future here?” which he blamed on the Labour leader’s failure to rid his party of anti-Semitism. Bombs stop raining over southern Israel in response to informal cease-fire

(JTA) – Sirens warning of rockets and mortars launched from Gaza stopped early Wednesday morning in southern Israel with an informal cease-fire agreement apparently reached.

The sirens had sounded throughout the night Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, sending area residents running for bomb shelters and safe rooms. No one was injured in the barrages of projectiles fired overnight at southern Israeli communities. [Read more…]

ABC cancels Roseanne Barr’s show after star’s racist comments

(JTA) – ABC cancelled the hit series “Roseanne” after its star posted racist comments on social media.

The network announced the cancellation on Tuesday after Roseanne Barr drew wide criticism for a tweet in which she mocked Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to president Barack Obama. [Read more…]

Chabad centre at Oxford hit with anti-Semitic incidents

(JTA) — In two anti-Semitic incidents involving the same Jewish community centre in the British university city of Oxford, perpetrators spread white powder and started a fire outside the building.

Talcum powder was flung over the garbage bins at the Chabad Student Centre Wednesday and offensive letters left at the building, the This is Oxforshire daily newspaper reported. On Friday, racist notes were left around the building and a fire was started outside the building. [Read more…]

Mortar shell explodes in kindergarten yard amid rocket barrage on Israel

(JTA) – At least 28 mortar shells were fired from Gaza on southern Israel, including one that exploded in the yard of a kindergarten shortly before students were set to arrive.

The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted most of the shells, which were fired in three barrages on Tuesday morning, according to the Israel Defense Forces. It was the largest number of projectiles fired on Israel from the coastal strip since the 2014 Gaza war. [Read more…]

Israel’s Chief Rabbinate rejects authority of certain U.S. Orthodox rabbis, letter shows

JERUSALEM (JTA) – An internal correspondence document written by a senior member of Israel’s Rabbinical Courts rejects the authority of all rabbis who receive their ordination from a yeshiva located in New York.

The document, obtained by Itim, a non-profit that guides Israelis through the country’s religious bureaucracy, shows that despite the haredi Orthodox-dominated Chief Rabbinate’s insistence that there are no criteria or blacklists for recognition of rabbis abroad, the Rabbinate rejects the halachic authority of certain Orthodox rabbis in the United States [Read more…]
