Israeli retaliatory strikes hit Hamas posts in Gaza

(JTA) – Israeli tanks and planes fired on four Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for mortar shells fired on soldiers working in southern Israel, the Israeli army said.

Following the mortar attacks early Thursday afternoon, trains running between the southern Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Sderot were stopped. Buses were sent to pick up stranded passengers. Service resumed about two hours later. [Read more…]

Palestinian farmer killed after mob attacks group of Jewish children hiking in West Bank

(JTA) – A Palestinian farmer was shot and killed after a group of Palestinians threw rocks at a group of Jewish children and their adult escorts hiking in the West Bank.

The children were on a hike to celebrate the bar mitzvah of one of the children, and walked near the Palestinian village of Qusra, located near Nablus in the northern West Bank, according to reports. [Read more…]

Polish Jewish leaders offer support after attack on Warsaw Muslim centre

WARSAW, Poland (JTA) – Leaders of the Polish Jewish community expressed sympathy with the Muslim community after an attack on a mosque in Warsaw.

On Monday night, rocks and bricks were thrown at the Muslim Cultural Center in Warsaw, smashing the windows of the building. The buildings garden also was destroyed by the vandals. The perpetrators did not get inside the building. Security camera footage shows at least two people perpetrating the attack. It is not the first time the mosque has been targeted. [Read more…]

(JTA) – In Jerusalem and New York, Jewish activists for an independent Kurdistan hosted events promoting the cause with the participation of Israeli, French and British officials.

The New York event Tuesday was a first-of-it-kind screening before 700 people of a documentary by the French-Jewish philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy on the Peshmerga, Kurdish fighters combatting the Islamic State terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Jewish groups urge Israel not to deport African refugees

WASHINGTON (JTA) – An array of U.S. Jewish groups urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt plans to deport tens of thousands of African refugees, offering to assist in their care.

“We are concerned that if you move forward with these plans the lives of thousands of individuals will be put in jeopardy, and the name of the Jewish State and the Jewish People will be irreparably stained,” said the letter sent Wednesday by 25 groups including HIAS, the leading Jewish immigration advocacy group; the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; the National Council of Jewish Women; the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly; and T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights. WASHINGTON (JTA) – Ten U.S. senators, among them four Jews, wrote Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him not to demolish Palestinian villages that Israel has deemed unauthorized.

“We have long championed a two-state solution as a just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” said the letter initiated by Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who are both Jewish. “Yet, your government’s efforts to forcibly evict entire Palestinian communities and expand settlements throughout the West Bank not only directly imperil a two-state solution, but we believe also endanger Israel’s future as a Jewish democracy.” [Read more…]

‘Nazi Grandma’ in Germany will serve jail time

(JTA) – The octogenarian known as the “Nazi Grandma” will serve 14 months in a German prison for Holocaust denial after losing an appeal on one of several convictions.

Ursula Haverbeck, 89, was sentenced Tuesday by a district appeals court in Detmold for repeatedly denying the Holocaust, which is a crime in Germany. [Read more…]

Jews are minority most targeted by hate crimes in Canada

(JTA) – Jews were the most targeted minority group for hate crimes in Canada in 2016, according to data released by Statistics Canada.

According to “Police-Reported Hate Crime, 2016,” released Tuesday, Jews were victimized 221 times, up from 178 the previous year, a rise of more than 20 per cent. Blacks were next at 214 incidents and those victimized due to sexual orientation, 176. [Read more…]

WASHINGTON (JTA) – An array of Jewish groups condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for his retweet of three incendiary videos posted by a British anti-Muslim agitator.

“It is no longer alarming that our @POTUS is tweeting violent anti-Muslim videos created by far right extremists – it is a **four alarm fire.**,” Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said Wednesday on Twitter. “Of course this will embolden bigots in the US and abroad.” [Read more…]
