U.S. envoy to Israel David Friedman calls for Jewish unity, sheds diplomatic veneer

JERUSALEM (JTA) – The U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, called for Jewish unity in his first public speech since taking office last month.

Friedman also called out an unnamed Jewish organization for threatening to withdraw its support for Israel in the wake of the Israeli government’s decision on Sunday to freeze a compromise on egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall. [Read more…]

Budapest mayor shutters Jewish centre bar

(JTA) – City officials in Budapest shut down the bar and cafeteria of a Jewish community centre that is favoured by opposition activists, saying illegal substances were found during a drug raid there.

The Aurora community centre received the closure notice on Wednesday, two weeks after the raid, in which 30 police officers detained and questioned 15 suspects. Some were found to be in possession of cannabis, said Daniel Mayer, a spokesperson for Aurora. [Read more…]

Support for Israel could wane with Western Wall deal frozen, Presidents Conference warns

(JTA) – An erosion of American Jewish support for Israel could result from the freezing of the Western Wall agreement, an influential Jewish umbrella group said in a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It is imperative that the government move expeditiously to address this matter and come up with a resolution that is equitable to all, as you sought to do in the agreement that was reached before,” read the letter sent Wednesday by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, which represents more than 50 national Jewish groups in the United States. Israeli lawmakers who vote for conversion bill not welcome in Chicago, Jewish federation head says

(JTA) – Israeli lawmakers who vote for a conversion bill making its way through the Knesset are not welcome in Chicago, said a top Jewish leader there.

“The federation in Chicago will not be hosting any member of Knesset that votes for this bill. None. They will not be welcome in our community,” Steven Nasatir, president of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, told The Times of Israel in an interview published Tuesday.
