Estonian Jewry celebrates revival 75 years after Nazis declared it extinct

(JTA) – Seventy-five years after the Nazis declared that Estonia was “Jew free,” the Baltic country’s president celebrated the return of Jewish life there at an event attended by Israeli politicians and rabbis.

President Kersti Kaljulaid received the guests, including Israeli Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi David Lau at a ceremony Thursday in Tallinn, the capital, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the first Jewish community in Estonia after the Holocaust. [Read more…]


Scuffle erupts at rally against CUNY’s hosting of BDS promoter Linda Sarsour

(JTA) – A scuffle broke out between supporters and critics of the City University of New York’s plan to host Linda Sarsour, an activist opposed to U.S. President Donald Trump and a supporter of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

The incident occurred Thursday night outside the CUNY building in Manhattan, where activists against radical Islam, including Pamela Geller and Milo Yiannopoulos, had rallied in protest of the decision by the institution’s School of Public Health to host Sarsour on Friday as a commencement speaker, the New York Daily News reported. Liberman says Israel tweaked intel sharing after Trump revelations to Russians

(JTA) – Israel’s defense minister said Israel made changes to how it shares intelligence with the United States in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s revelation of highly classified information to Russian officials.

Avigdor Liberman told Army Radio on Wednesday that the change would not affect the close intelligence-sharing relationship between Israel and the United States. [Read more…]


Appeals court upholds HIAS suit against Trump travel ban

(JTA) – HIAS hailed a U.S. federal appellate court’s decision upholding its appeal against U.S. President Donald Trump’s travel bans.

“The groundswell of public protest against the bans has been inspiring and unrelenting,” the lead Jewish group advocating for immigrants rights said in a statement Thursday after the decision by the Richmond, VA.–Fourth Circuit Court. “The people have spoken, as has the judicial branch.” [Read more…]


Hecklers shout ‘Heil Hitler!’ during South African Jewish school’s Holocaust play

(JTA) – Teenage hecklers interrupted a South African Jewish school’s performance of a play about the Holocaust with chants of “Heil Hitler!” and other anti-Semitic taunts.

Middle-school children from the King David Victory Park School were performing “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” on May 18 as part of a one-act play festival at Waterstone College, a private K-12 school in Johannesburg. While they were performing the story of a Jewish boy who perished in a concentration camp, teenagers in the audience from another high school began to taunt them. [Read more…]


Mother of slain yeshiva student Ezra Schwartz says Palestinians must stop paying my son’s killer

(JTA) – The mother of American yeshiva student Ezra Schwartz, who was shot to death by a Palestinian assailant in the West Bank, told a United Nations forum that his murderer should not be rewarded.

Ruth Schwartz said Wednesday that the Palestinian Authority (PA) pays a monthly stipend to Mohammed Abed Odeh Harub, who was sentenced by an Israeli court to four life sentences for the November 2015 attack. [Read more…]


Facebook lenient on blocking Holocaust denial, leaked documents show

(JTA) – Facebook requires its content moderators to take down Holocaust denial material in only four countries, including Israel, even though it is illegal in 14, according to a company handbook provided to the network’s moderators.
