North Miami Beach Jewish school evacuated over bomb threat

(JTA) – A Jewish day school in North Miami Beach was evacuated following a bomb threat.

The Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes school, which has enrolled 600 students from early childhood to high school, received a fax on Sunday demanding $25,000 in ransom and threatening to detonate explosives already in place at the school if the demand was not met, WSVN News 7 reported late Sunday. Sephardi chief rabbi tells religious soldiers how to protest women singers; compares women who wear immodest clothing to animals

JERUSALEM (JTA) – The Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel appeared to compare women who wear immodest clothing to animals in a public sermon.

Rabbi Yizhak Yosef also counselled religious soldiers on how to protest required attendance at Israel Defense Forces ceremonies that feature women singers in the Saturday night speech first reported Sunday by the Hebrew-language haredi Orthodox news website Kikar Shabbat. [Read more…]

Children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton dedicate Prague memorial to their parents

(JTA) – A group of children saved from the Nazis by Sir Nicholas Winton unveiled a monument in Prague to their parents.

The monument, called the Farewell Memorial, is comprised of a replica of a train door from 1939, with the imprints of hands of children on one side, and of parents on the other, the Associated Press reported. The memorial was dedicated at Prague’s main train station on Saturday. [Read more…]

Druze-Israeli minister publicly meets Arab officials in Ecuador on Trump peace initiative

(JTA) – In an unprecedented move, an Israeli Knesset minister met in public with officials from Gulf states and a Palestinian diplomat in Ecuador’s capital city Quito.

Israeli Minister Ayoub Kara, who is a Druze Arab, attended last week’s swearing-in ceremony of Lenin Moreno as Ecuador’s new president along with delegates from around the world. He credited U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts in the Middle East for bringing about his visit. [Read more…]

Jewish, Muslim Manchester mourners have been friends for 10 years

(JTA) – The elderly Jewish woman and Muslim man whose photo mourning together at a memorial to the victims of the Manchester attack went viral on social media say they have been good friends for over 10 years.

Renee Black, 93,  and Sadiq Patel, 46, from Blackburn, Lancashire, one of the most deprived and racially segregated areas in Britain, are both members of The Interfaith Forum, a voluntary group devoted to promoting harmony between different faiths and ethnic communities, the London-based Daily Mail reported. Portland man charged with light rail murder was known white supremacist, anti-Semite

(JTA) – The Portland, Oregon man who allegedly killed two men on a commuter train after they intervened as he spewed hate speech at two women who looked Muslim is a known local white supremacist, a local newspaper reported.

Jeremy Christian, 35, was arrested early Saturday and charged with murder, attempted murder and a hate crime, among other crimes, in connection with the slayings Friday on the MAX, or Metropolitan Area Express Light Rail, the Portland Mercury reported. [Read more…]

(JTA) – Thousands of Israelis gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv to demonstrate against what organizers called “50 years of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories.”

The rally on Saturday night under the banner of “Two States – One Hope” was organized by anti-settlement group Peace Now and included left-wing Israeli political parties such as the Zionist Union and Meretz, as well as several other left-wing organizations including the Geneva Initiative, the New Israel Fund, “Standing Together,” “Zazim” and “Reinforcing the Left on the Web.” [Read more…]

‘No Jews,’ other anti-Semitic messages painted on home for sale in New York

(JTA) – “No Jews” was spray painted from floor to ceiling on the walls of a home for sale in Rockland County, New York.

Anti-Semitic messages also were painted throughout the home, including in the kitchen and on the floors. The graffiti was discovered in the empty home, which is for sale, last week, by a home inspector who was checking on the structure for a couple that wished to purchase it. [Read more…]

Canada, Britain and U.S. oppose UN health body’s resolution singling out Israel

(JTA) – Canada, Great Britain and the United States joined three other nations in voting against a World Health Organization resolution that they said singles out Israel for criticism.

The resolution, which passed by an overwhelming majority on Friday during the 70th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, mostly speaks of the need to improve services provided to Palestinians and residents of the Golan Heights. It also mentions the health needs of “prisoners and detainees” in Israel. [Read more…]
