Lebanon calls for ban of ‘Wonder Woman’ film because lead actress Gal Gadot is Israeli

(JTA) – Lebanon’s Economy Ministry has filed a request to ban the upcoming film “Wonder Woman” because its star, Gal Gadot, is an actress and model from Israel.

A Lebanese security official told CBS News on Tuesday that the required committee of six Lebanese ministries has yet to take up the request. [Read more…]

Amos Oz honoured by Germany’s Reform rabbinical school

BERLIN (JTA) – Israeli novelist Amos Oz was honored by Germany’s Reform rabbinical school with its annual Abraham Geiger Award.

The 78-year-old writer, described as an “eloquent spokesperson of the Zionist left,” was honoured Thursday as “a firm believer in human beings and their ability to change the world for the better,” Rabbi Walter Homolka, rector of the Abraham Geiger College, said in announcing the award. South African student, principal apologize for anti-Semitic taunts during Holocaust play

(JTA) – The high school student who interrupted a South African Jewish school’s performance of a play about the Holocaust with chants of “Heil Hitler!” and other anti-Semitic taunts has expressed remorse.

The principal of Edenvale High School, Larry Harmer, also apologized for the incident at a meeting Monday with the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, though he reportedly told parents in a memo sent home the same day that he believes “there has been much that has been incorrectly reported in the media‚ which has blown the incident out of all proportion.” [Read more…]

U.K. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn denies honouring Munich attack killer

(JTA) – Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom, denied reports that in 2014 he honoured a Palestinian perpetrator of the 1972 massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

Corbyn, who became the head of Labour in 2015, is a hard-left politician whom the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews said “most people in the Jewish community can’t trust” because of his praise for Hezbollah and Hamas and perceived failures in addressing anti-Semitic rhetoric by some of his supporters. Arrested cousin of Manchester bomber posted anti-Semitic messages on Facebook

(JTA) – A cousin of the Manchester bomber arrested last week in connection with the attack that left 22 dead posted anti-Semitic messages on social media.

Abderahman Forjani, 21, was arrested on May 23, hours after the suicide bomb attack by Salman Adedi outside the Manchester Arena at the end of a concert by American popstar Ariana Grande. His brother, Abdalla Forjani, also was arrested. [Read more…]

Lithuanian Jewish leader sorry for insulting Russian-speaking Jews

(JTA) – The contested leader of Lithuania’s Jewish community apologized for the publication of an article on the community’s website accusing her opponents of being Russians claiming to be Jews.

The apology Friday by Faina Kukliansky, chair of the LZB umbrella group of Lithuanian Jewish organizations, followed the publication Wednesday of an article on the LZB website about an election that day for the board of the Jewish community of Vilnius, the capital – LZB’s largest affiliate. Kukliansky declared the election void after a critic of her administration, Simonas Gurevicius, won the vote in Vilnius. [Read more…]

Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, wife questioned in tax fraud case

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and his wife, Yaffa, were questioned by investigators after 14 suspects in a tax fraud case against Deri were detained.

Deri, who also is head of the Sephardic Orthodox Shas Party, and his wife, were questioned separately on Monday following the arrests. The couple is being investigated as part of a Tax Authority investigation into money laundering and false income and assets reporting. [Read more…]
