(JTA) – Some 74 Palestinian employees of SodaStream, who lost their jobs when the company shut its West Bank plant in the face of international pressure, will return to work at its factory in southern Israel.

The employees’ work permits, which allowed them to enter Israel from the West Bank, expired in February 2016. [Read more…]

Elderly man wearing kippah attacked near L.A. synagogue

(JTA) – An elderly man wearing a kippah was attacked as he walked to morning prayers in a Los Angeles neighborhood.

The attack took place Monday morning in the Fairfax District, near the Congregation Bais Yehuda synagogue, according to the local ABC affiliate, KABC. Surveillance video shows the assailant punching and kicking the man, knocking him to the ground. The assailant then walks away from the scene.

Los Angeles police have not classified the attack as a hate crime or robbery but rather a random attack, KABC reported.

(JTA) – Bulgaria’s deputy prime minister said jokingly that he may have behaved inappropriately when visiting a former Nazi concentration camp.

Valeri Simeonov, also vice-president of the United Patriots, a nationalist coalition of political parties, told the  Sega newspaper on Tuesday that he and some his friends may have taken spoof pictures of themselves in Buchenwald during the 1970s.  [Read more…]

Ivanka Trump’s rabbi says permission to travel on Shabbat didn’t come from him

(JTA) – Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, the prominent modern Orthodox rabbi who oversaw Ivanka Trump’s conversion to Judaism, said he did not give the first daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner, a dispensation to fly on Air Force One on Shabbat.

Lookstein told Isaac Herzog, leader of the opposition Zionist Union party, that it was “fake news” that he had given them permission to travel by plane Saturday for U.S. President Donald Trump’s first international trip, the Israeli daily Yediot Acharonot reported Sunday. Several Israeli newspapers picked up the report in advance of Trump’s arrival scheduled for Monday afternoon.  [Read more…]
