Yad Vashem statement stresses Holocaust was ‘unprecedented genocide of six million Jews’

JERUSALEM (JTA) – The Yad Vashem Holocaust museum said in a statement that the Holocaust was “the unprecedented genocide of six million Jews.”

Report: Trump aide Boris Epshteyn wrote Holocaust statement that omitted Jews

(JTA) – The White House statement for International Holocaust Remembrance Day that has generated controversy for omitting Jews reportedly was written by a Jewish aide to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Boris Epshteyn, a special assistant to the president, crafted the statement, the political news website Politico reported Monday evening, citing an unnamed source “with knowledge of the situation.” [Read more…]

Netanyahu: Israel’s ties with Mexico ‘stronger than any passing misunderstanding’

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said his nation and Mexico “will continue to have good relations” in the aftermath of a tweet in which he was seen as supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to keep out illegal immigrants.

The tweet has caused a diplomatic uproar between Israel and Mexico since it was posted Saturday. [Read more…]

Israel reportedly asking: Does U.S. travel ban include our citizens?

(JTA) – Israel reportedly is seeking clarification of whether the U.S. travel ban on nationals from seven Arab countries applies to Israelis born in those countries.

The French news agency AFP reported that Israel’s Foreign Ministry has been seeking information on whether the ban covers tens of thousands of Israeli citizens, mostly elderly, who were born in those countries.  [Read more…]

Arab Israeli called ‘Jew lover’ by his girlfriend charged in fatal shooting of Jewish man

(JTA) – An Arab-Israeli man angry after his girlfriend called him a “Jew lover” was indicted in the shooting that killed a Jewish bus driver and wounded another visibly religious Jewish man in Haifa.

Mohammad Yusef Shinawi, 21, was charged Monday for the attacks that took place on Jan. 3. The shootings had originally been reported as criminal, but are now considered nationalistic in nature, according to the indictment, the Shin Bet security service said in a statement released Monday.  [Read more…]

(JTA) – Palestinian officials are demanding an apology from the new United Nations chief after he said it was “completely clear that the Temple that the Romans destroyed in Jerusalem was a Jewish temple.”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also told Israel Radio in an interview Friday with its New York correspondent that “no one can deny the fact that Jerusalem is holy to three religions today,” including Judaism.  [Read more…]
