(JTA) – The Jerusalem District Planning Committee approved construction of 900 homes in a Jewish neighbourhood of eastern Jerusalem.
Peace Now, a nonprofit that monitors settlement construction in eastern Jerusalem and the West Bank, announced the approval Thursday.
The funding for the housing, in the haredi Orthodox neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, was approved in 2010, while U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting Israel, and was criticized by the Obama administration, which viewed it as a sign of disrespect toward Biden.
The Obama administration opposes Israeli construction in disputed parts of Jerusalem and in the West Bank.
